PNG vs JPG vs WebP

PNG is lossless and supports transparency — ideal for icons, logos and UI screenshots, but files can be large. JPG is great for photos and works everywhere, but has no transparency. WebP, created by Google, supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP supported everywhere?
Yes. All modern browsers (Chrome, Safari 14+, Firefox, Edge) and Android support WebP, and iOS 14+ can display it. For very old software, JPG and PNG remain the safest choices.
What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?
JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default). Convert to PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Can I convert WebP back to PNG or JPG?
Yes. Drop a WebP file and choose PNG or JPG as the output format.
Can I convert HEIC iPhone photos?
Only if your browser can open HEIC images (Safari on Mac and iPhone can). Other browsers will show an error for HEIC files.
